cake + cocktails

Headed over to South Kensington last weekend to attend the Blogger Bake Sale kindly hosted by the beautiful Rosie from The Londoner

It was a fun afternoon of meeting, eating + learning new things

my lovely friend Rowena's yummy Coconut Rum Balls

The sun streamed through the windows at Bumpkin while we supped English Garden cocktails...

...and feasted upon the delectable selection of cakes before us

Can’t wait to do it again.

Thank you Rosie <3

As promised here’s the recipe for the cake I took along...
(it's secretly gluten + dairy free! Shhhh, don't tell anyone).
So pleased that it went down well!

Orchard Cake

3 Apples, eating variety, medium sized
125g Caster Sugar
160g Butter [or 150g Rapeseed Oil if you want dairy free]
4 Eggs, separated
170g ground almonds
1 tsp Baking Powder
1 ½ tsp  Ground Cinnamon
2 tsp Vanilla Extract
1/8 tsp Salt
70g Buckwheat Flour
Icing sugar

Method:

1.     Preheat the oven to 180 degrees

2.     Oil the bottom of a large loaf tin and line with baking parchment.

3.     Peel and core the apples. Chop into pieces. In a large bowl cream the butter and half the sugar [if using oil instead of the butter then just combine]

4.     Beat the yolks in one at a time

5.     Stir in almonds, baking powder, cinnamon and vanilla extract

6.     In another bowl whip the egg whites and salt until it forms soft peaks. Gradually add the remaining sugar beating until it appears slightly glossy

7.     Fold a third of the egg whites into the almond mixture to loosen

8.     Then add the remaining egg whites

9.     Sift in the Buckwheat flour a third at a time folding gently

10.  Add in the apples, again folding gently

11.  Pour the mixture into your prepared loaf tin sift over a little icing sugar and bake in the oven for 50 minutes or until a skewer comes out cleanly

Tastes great as it is or serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

ENJOY x

Celebrating

It was my birthday last week so after a few cocktails at mine my friends and I decided to head over to Love + Liquor in Kilburn. I  like the easy feel, decent drinks menu and fresh commercial and house tunes...it just gets better and better. Kind of reminds me of some of the places I've been to out in New York.

The lovely Clem gave us the run of the VIP and our fantastic waitress meant no queuing for the bar

Ben Cain was dropping the good stuff and we danced till the early morn.

There certainly was plenty of liquor to go round

and fire dancers on the bar

My tip? Get yourself on the guest list and arrive before 10 if you want to avoid the ridiculous queues. Other than that if you're in the area definitely stop by. I'm sure you'll have a great night x

See Jane Run

The Saint Laurent Jane sandal is beautiful and worth every penny but it's £500+ price tag isn't for everyone.
If you could do with spanking your plastic little less this month then head down to your nearest Zara and check out this sleek homage.

Edit: The Zara shoe is almost sold out online but still currently in stock in most stores

Cat Call

I'm on the hunt for a new phone case and am of the opinion that you can never go wrong with a bit of leopard print.
There's something about the primal, wild and distinctively contrasting motif that always catches my eye.
These are the ones I'm currently deciding between.

Hangover Cure

Everyone has their own idea about what cures a hangover.
I'm not saying this will work for you but here is mine.

6 carrots
2 apples
2 inch chunk of ginger

Method: Wash and juice the above.
Then (if you feel up to it) go for a walk; fresh air makes all the difference.

Pantone 2013

'Green is the prime colour of the world, and that from which its loveliness arises."

Pedro Calderon de la Barca

It would seem its official, Pantone's Color of the year for 2013 is none other than Emerald.
Since this is a favoured colour of mine (along with most other shades of green)I can't help but agree.
See below for some of my picks to make your days a little more verdant.

Things that make me smile

Putting up some Christmas decorations this week has brought back memories. One of the nicest was wandering around the christmas markets on a freezing cold day in New York sipping Ninth Street coffee.
These cards were amongst my finds that day.

Into the woods...

I could really do with escaping today.
Leaving the city behind and finding some peace in the forest.
I think I'm missing the light.
Light through colour; through emerald and gold.
Colour that feeds you and makes you feel whole.

Make & Take

This is cute, easy and bound to brighten the view while someone’s doing the washing up {so long as they have a window sill to put it on}

Plus, if you're anything like me, it can be mostly made from stuff you’d find hanging about your home.

For cheap baby succulents try Homebase or Ikea.

Kew Gardens

Over the Easter break M and I decided to head over to Kew to wander around the botanical gardens and visit our favourite restaurant.
The weather wasn’t particularly great but there’s something about the royal jardin that is just so lovely no matter what time of year it is.
I am going to make a promise to visit more often.
